Cold Like War is We Came As Romans debut with Sharptone Records and it seems the new label has allowed them to share their sound in a way they have not before. Metalcore can be as multifaceted as any other genre and WCAR explores every aspect of that sound on the new record. From hardcore breakdowns and melodic vocals to assaulting metal drums and cinematic synth additions, there is a startling variety amongst these ten tracks and each truly works.
Anyone who hoped We Came As Romans would use this record to fall into a more specifically hardcore or metal sound may be disappointed that it is not as heavy as they hoped. We Came As Romans have rejected the idea that metal is only noise by bringing different melodic aspects to it and still keeping a heavy sound and hardcore spirit. Even on growled vocals and hellish guitars, the sound is a clean, full, and well produced. Each track has its own development but Cold Like War is a record that will shine when played beginning to end. Likewise, the variety of energy levels and sounds on the record will translate well for live audiences.
“Wasted Age,” “Lost in the Moment,” and “Cold Like War'” were released one at a time as hype building singles prior to the full record’s release. It seems that We Came As Romans prefer to feature singles that have a half metal/half pop format, with alternating melodic and metal vocals. They clearly have confidence in that structured metalcore sound, but they also expand upon and isolate different elements of their sound in more unique ways outside of their major singles.
“Encoder” is one of the stand-out tracks where We Came As Romans willingness to experiment shows. Synths, samples, and other electronic elements are always present in their music but are brought to the forefront on this track. Meanwhile, the record’s opener “Vultures with Clipped Wings” stays more true to a dark and cinematic metal approach. Even the melodic and synthy emo-pop slow song “Promise Me” has an immensely catchy appeal, despite highlighting a more tender facet of We Came as Romans personality.
There was a major sense of hype surrounding the release of “Cold Like War'” and as the first singles were dropped it only generated more excitement. There are some bold choices made across the record but so far it has been hugely we received by fans. We Came As Romans show unique new music can still be created in metal and hardcore, as long as innovation is embraced. Be sure to check out We Came as Romans live as their tour continues through this autumn.
