Behind the glitz and the glam of Hollywood, there is and will always be the dark underbelly that is hidden to the general public. Lauren Rocket’s single, “Sharks” takes on the classic saying, “swimming with the sharks,” twisting it into an empowering pop track that’s got teeth of its own.
Opening with scratching synths and heavy drum beat, Rocket’s voice enters singing,” swimming with the sharks, it’s a bad habit.” As the beat builds to the chorus, the pace stays consistent, adding an electric guitar. The bridge hits and the beat slows, giving off a reggae-esque beat. The songs with Rocket shouting, “swimming with the sharks, till I get what I want.”
Recently, Rocket has pushed herself musically to write songs about anything but love. If anything, this song is about self-love. She empowers the artist to swim with but also warns that in the end, artists are going to have to bite back.
