It takes a lot of grit, passion, and love for what you do (for 17 years) and still sound like you’re hungrier than ever to put our your best work. Silverstein is back (and never left for some of us) with their latest effort, Dead Reflection. After 17 years, countless tours and endless energy, this Canadian five-piece comes out the gates strong with the first song “Last Looks”. There is something fun and classic of a beefy guitar riff and lead singer Shane Told a noteworthy dynamic vocal delivery. As the song progresses and goes into the second track, Retrograde, the momentum is sustained and it doesn’t feel forced.
One deniable factor in these songs throughout the record is the drumming Paul Koehler brings. The syncopation between his playing and guitar players Josh Bradford and Paul Marc Rousseau, there are idiosyncrasies that could only be forged through years and years of writing together. The cohesiveness of the power and the brilliantly dialed in bass tone through Billy Hamilton really shines from start to finish on this record.
This 41 minute trek through some of what seems to be a personal diary for Shane is a fantastic ride as the songs like Lost Positives and Mirror Box bring an effective change of pace that allows the spectrum of songwriting to be taken in. A band doesn’t inch closer to the two decade milestone without learning a few tricks along the way. Occasional clean guitars, beautifully sung melodies and somehow a new level of heavy are all achieved on this record. Dead Reflection is a fantastic collection of songs that a new band would be proud and it’s something even more special when a band can still put out catchy, timeless songs in their eighth record.
Overall, this is a must listen if you’re a long time fan, relatively new to the band or giving them a go for the first time. Silverstein managed to orchestrate an album that could be enjoyed just about anyone. I for one am a fan of this record and urge you to go out and give it a listen from front to back.
