Rise Against

Rise Against’s eighth full-length album, Wolves, out today, June 9th on Virgin Records, finds the band hitting a career-high with this, one of their most focused, inspired and all around awesome records to date.

The tumultuous, if not completely bizarre political climate of America 2017, has created the perfect breeding ground for new Rise Against music to flourish. This high octane punk rock quartet are known for their impassioned live performances and equally fiery socio-political views and on Wolves, the band perfectly combines the two; cranking out a masterfully crafted rock record meant to rally the forces of decency against the increasingly corrupt powers that be. You might not agree with their political views, but there’s no denying the power of these choruses. It just can’t be done.

The self-titled opening track “Wolves” is one of the most raging songs on the album and lets the listener know that Rise Against means business. “The Violence” and “Bullshit” rock pretty hard as well, but even these blistering tracks are still loaded with enough hooks and melodies to entice anyone and everyone. It’s amazing that even an eloquently titled number like “Bullshit” could probably clean up on radio charts despite its explicit lyrics because that’s how infectious these songs are.

Frontman Tim McIlrath’s trademark howl does some serious work on this album. His distinctive voice coupled with the band’s uncanny backup vocal attack helps make Wolves one of the most sing-a-long worthy records in years. Good luck trying to get the words from “House On Fire” and “Parts Per Million” out of your head. Some might be “Mourning In Amerika” given the current mess our nation’s capital remains embroiled in, but Rise Against urge their audience to continue fighting on, to evolve past the base tendencies of human nature, to “become something greater than the violence in our nature” as McIlrath sings on “The Violence.” Hopefully, the band inspires people to make this great cultural change, but one thing is for certain, Wolves will definitely inspire people to rock the hell out again.
