Prodigy lead singer Keith Flint was discovered dead in his Essex home today. He was 49 years old. The band was about to embark on a world tour in support of their latest album, No Tourists, released late last year.
Police were called to Flint’s home early this morning to investigate reports of a man unconscious in his house. No official cause of death has been reported, but fellow band member Liam Howlett told fans that Flint took his own life in an Instagram post here.
The band’s official press release on the incident reads: “It is with deepest shock and sadness that we can confirm the death of our brother and best friend Keith Flint. ‘A true pioneer, innovator, and legend. He will be forever missed.”
Prodigy was formed in 1990 and exploded onto the world scene with their seminal 1997 album The Fat of the Land. The album spawned three massive singles, “Firestarter,” “Breathe” and “Smack My Bitch Up.” They landed two Grammy nominations as well as MTV VMA awards.
The band is widely considered to have helped bring dance music into the mainstream. They were also renowned for helping to pioneer the Big Beat sound in dance music.
