Father John Misty (aka Josh Tillman) announced his new album Pure Comedy today, due out April 7 from Sub Pop, with a 25-minute video. This is his third studio album and his first new material since his 2015 breakout release I Love You, Honeybear. The video is a surreal black and white documentary featuring apocalyptic imagery of Los Angeles burning intercut with excerpts of Josh Tillman recording new songs in the studio. The new music features an orchestra including both a full string and horn section.

Tillman released an essay of just under 2,000 words explaining the new album’s inspiration. It begins with a quote from Ecclesiastes, explains the evolution of man and posits that mankind may have reached too far, it expounds on the limits of religion, and ends with the phrase “bears man.” It is pure brilliant insanity as only Father John Misty can phrase it. The album will come in four color variants. The Deluxe edition LP features aluminum and copper-colored vinyl and features all four color variants in a customizable jacket. It will also feature a bonus fold-out poster and a holographic tarot card.
