MARY MIDDLEFIELD’S NEW SINGLE “YOUNG AND DUMB” BRINGS DARK THEATRICS TO CENTER STAGE

Mary Middlefield began her music career as a classical violin student, directly foreshadowing her future path as a solo artist. Her brand of dark, theatrical rock music is a callback to bands like Panic! At The Disco, though it features deeper hints of Dream Theater and Evanescence moments, too. That may sound like I just picked some names out of a hat, but I promise it makes sense when you listen to “Young And Dumb.”

Sonically, this track takes listeners on a unique journey. It’s cinematic, with an intense buildup towards the bridge driving everything home. I hope that Mary Middlefield inspires up-and-coming experimentalists to join her on her mission because this sound is unlike anything I have heard before.

Lyrically, the song is relatable. Most people have been, “21, still so young” at least once in their lives. The place you were

at when you were 21 is vastly different than your future, even 5 years later.

“Young And Dumb” will be in my head for the foreseeable future. This song belongs in the soundtrack to either a dramatic coming-of-age drama or a video game.
