What is punk? It’s a question that if you ask 10 different people, you’re sure to get 10 different answers. If you asked me, I would say at its core punk is counterculture. What you’re countering varies and is up to you, but it’s being dissatisfied with the status quo and doing something about it. Defining punk is far more complex than this, but this is my basic interpretation and how it shapes me (don’t hurt me, please).
With that said, in the current divided political climate, what could possibly be more rebellious and more defiant than getting along with the people next to you regardless of their age, race, or gender identity? Against Me! had a wonderfully diverse crowd, and it was beautiful to see people coming together for their love of music. Laura Jane Grace has the ability to bring together the old school punks and the queer punx, and I can’t say I’ve ever seen such a seamless blending of groups.
Opening up with “True Trans Soul Rebel” off of their most recent album Transgender Dysphoria Blues, Against Me! had the crowd going absolutely nuts screaming along and really set the tone for the night. Following up quickly with “I Was a Teenage Anarchist”, Grace points out the flaws in the mentality of the anarchist revolutions she was part of in her youth. Music should challenge beliefs, even your own beliefs, and Against Me! does just that.
The rest of the set was packed with great songs including ”Dead Friend”, “The Ocean”, and a cover of the song “Androgynous”. Enjoy some pics from the show!
