Dave Grohl released a mini-doc today entitled “Play.” In it he writes and performs a 23-minute rock song, playing all the instruments in one unbroken take. This is not just to show off, but to promote the need for musical education for kids.
He describes the need he felt very young to challenge himself musically, and that even to this day, he is not truly a master of any instrument. Music is something that he learns more about on a daily basis. Directed by Dave Grohl, the film includes interviews with kids from the Join the Band school, a Californian studio that puts young musicians in touch with each other and offers them a space to rehearse together.
The performance itself is a tour de force. Filmed over several days, every instrument is played in an unbroken take, so if Grohl screwed it up 20 minutes in, he would have to start all over again. And if you ever wanted to see Dave Grohl play a glockenspiel, this is the video for you!
