The Cribs

Zane Lowe’s BEATS 1 has just dropped The Cribs’ latest single “What Have You Done For Me,” off upcoming album 24-7 Rock Star Shit. The English indie rock band is comprised of twins Gary and Ryan Jarman and their younger brother Ross. The announcement of the new record came as a surprise to fans last week, not long before its upcoming August 11th release. This record is The Crib’s seventh and will be released through Sonic Blew / House Arrest. 24-7 Rock Shit Show serves as an appropriately named and intentionally underproduced punk follow up to their more pop minded 2015 release For All My Sisters.

The Cribs

After conferring in Portland, The Cribs headed to Chicago to record 24-7 Rock Shit Show with Steve Albini at Electrical Audio studio. The record was completed in only five days and features already released tracks “Rainbow Ridge,” “In Your Palace,” and “Year of Hate,” with “What Have You Done Now” now added to the track list. The album was recorded live and straight to tape, as a part of the stripped down approach that motivated it.

“What Have You Done Now” is a fun track that has a twangy rock and roll sound, with a tongue in cheek sense of drive and immediacy. This energy is balanced by more cynical lyrics, delivered through raw vocals with raspy shouts thrown in. They have achieved that intentionally unfinished and underproduced sound they desired fairly successfully. It has been done in a way that will appeal to fans who have followed them for over a decade but still allows the record to stand on its own as a piece of art.

“What Have You Done” has a simple song structure with catchy, in your face repetition on the hollered chorus. It is classic punk inspired, but still cool and modern with a slightly upbeat feel. They have not totally abandoned indie rock and pop sounds on this album, but have found a successful balance between melody and distortion. This song is grungy and personal but still relatable to a variety of audiences.

The Cribs will be taking the new record on tour this summer, across the UK, US, and Canada, including an appearance in Los Angeles on October 10th at the Teragram Ballroom (full dates below). In the meantime, check out the new track “What Have You Done For Me” below and let us know what you think.
